Federihütte

Federihütte sits at 1375m in the Glarus Alps, a solid base for walking routes through limestone terrain. Reach it from Elm village (40 minutes by car from Glarus town). The approach hike takes 1.5 hours from Elm along a well-marked trail that climbs steadily through forest then opens to alpine pasture. The hut also connects to longer routes across the Säntis massif and down toward the Säntis region—useful for planning multi-day traverses.

The hut accommodates 40 people in dormitory beds. Meals focus on hearty mountain food; book dinner and breakfast when you reserve beds. Water comes from a spring; the hut has no shower. The SAC manages the hut and opens it year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions—confirm before setting out November to March. Staff can help with route planning for walks in the surrounding limestone country, where trails range from easy valley walks to steep ridge scrambles.

Book directly with the hut by phone or email at least one week ahead. July and August require booking 4-6 weeks in advance. The hut fills on weekends year-round. Mid-week visits in shoulder seasons (May-June, September) offer better availability and quieter hiking. Bring cash for small purchases; card payments may not be reliable in this remote location.
