Baita Altissimo

Baita Altissimo sits at 1,703m in the Dolomites near Cortina d'Ampezzo, in Italy's Veneto region. Reach it from Cortina by hiking 2.5 hours north through the Ra Gusela valley. The trail is well-marked and moderate, gaining 600m steadily through larch forest and alpine meadows. You can also approach from Auronzo di Cadore to the east, adding another 30 minutes. Most hikers use this hut as a base for exploring the surrounding peaks and high plateaus, or as a waypoint on the Alta Via 5 long-distance trek.
The hut is small and family-run, with around 40 beds in simple rooms. Meals are hearty mountain fare—expect fresh pasta, game dishes in season, and local dairy products. The kitchen serves breakfast and packed lunches. Water comes from a spring. The hut runs from mid-June through September, closing in winter and shoulder seasons. Facilities are basic but clean: no showers, though a washroom with cold water is available. Phone reception is unreliable.
Book 2–3 months ahead for July and August. Contact the hut directly by phone during season—email is slower. July weekends fill quickly. The hut prefers cash payment, though card is possible. Groups should give at least a week's notice. May and early June offer quieter conditions if you're comfortable with unpredictable weather and potentially closed upper trails due to snow.
