Baita Santamaria in Leten

Baita Santamaria sits at 1757m in the Leten Valley, a side valley branching south from the Val di Fassa in the Dolomites. Reach it from the hamlet of Leten (accessible by car from Canazei) in about 90 minutes on foot, or from Fedare via a steeper 2-hour approach. The hut lies on the Alta Via 1 long-distance route and serves as a solid base for day walks into the surrounding limestone peaks and alpine meadows.

The hut is a working mountain farm as much as a shelter. It has basic dormitory beds and a few private rooms, with capacity around 20 people. Meals focus on hearty local cooking—expect polenta, casunziei (Dolomite pasta parcels), and meat dishes. The hut operates seasonally, typically from June through September, though check ahead for exact dates. Water comes from a spring. There are no showers, and the toilet situation is rustic; this is alpine practicality rather than comfort.

Book directly by phone or arrange through the valley tourist office in Canazei. July and August fill quickly. The hut suits hikers comfortable with basic facilities who want to base themselves in the Val di Fassa without paying for a larger resort-style establishment. It's a genuine working hut, not a renovation project.
