About

Bivacco Chiara e Walter sits at 2,661m in the Albula Alps, accessible from the Val Bregaglia region. The approach takes 3–4 hours from Soglio or 4–5 hours from the Prättigau side. This is a true alpine bivouac, not a staffed hut—expect basic shelter and self-sufficiency. The location works well as a base for traverses across the Upper Albula or as a staging point for peaks in the 3,000m range nearby.

The bivouac has 9 beds split across a small building. Drinking water is available on-site. There are no meals, no stove fuel provided, and no guardian. Bring a camping stove, food, and a headtorch. The hut is managed by CAI (Italian Alpine Club) and CAI Chiavenna. Expect to be entirely self-reliant—this is expedition mountaineering, not alpine hotel comfort.

Book in advance through CAI Chiavenna to confirm access and current conditions. The hut operates year-round but requires winter experience and proper gear in cold months. July and August see the most use; shoulder seasons (June, September) are quieter. Check with the managing club before attempting winter access.
