About
Bivacco Valzaroten sits at 2,212m in the Prättigau Alps, above the Val Zarötl in Graubünden. Reach it from Schruns in Austria or from the Swiss side via Luzein. Most parties approach from Schruns, hiking 4–5 hours upvalley to the bivouac. The terrain is steep scree and rough grass in the final approach. This is a genuine high alpine location, not a destination hut.
The bivouac has 5 beds in basic dormitory conditions. There's no guardian, no meals, and no stove fuel—bring everything you need. Drinking water is available from the stream nearby. Use the outside toilet (pit style). The hut sits at the base of serious rock climbing terrain and serves climbers accessing routes on Säntis and surrounding peaks. Open year-round, though winter access requires mountaineering skills and avalanche awareness.
This is a self-service shelter for experienced alpinists, not a staffed hut. Book ahead by contacting the Schruns mountain guides or the Vorarlberg Alpine Club. Expect crowded conditions in July and August, especially on weekends. Bring your own sleeping bag, food, stove, and fuel. Check local avalanche bulletins before winter visits. Cell reception is poor; plan accordingly.
