Bivacco Zeb

Bivacco Zeb stands at 2,011m in the Val Bregaglia, reached via the hamlet of Dongo in the Graubünden section of this dramatic granite valley. The approach takes 2.5 hours from Dongo, climbing steeply through larch forest before breaking onto open terrain where the hut comes into view. This is a working route to higher peaks—most climbers use the bivouac as a staging point for granite climbing or mountaineering rather than a destination hike.

The bivouac is basic and intentionally so. Eight beds sit in a simple stone shelter. There's no warden, no meals, and no running water—bring everything you need. The hut has a stove and basic cooking equipment. Check beforehand whether water is available from snowmelt or a nearby stream; in dry autumn months you may need to carry water up. The structure is open year-round but only reliably accessible in summer and autumn when snow doesn't block the approach.

Book by contacting CAI Dongo directly. Space fills quickly in July and August when climbers stage for routes on Piz Badile and neighboring peaks. Expect to move fast once you reach the bivouac—most parties rest briefly before continuing to higher ground. The hut is best suited to experienced mountaineers comfortable with spartan conditions; casual walkers have better options elsewhere in the valley.
