Morteratsch

Rifugio Morteratsch sits at 2,080m in the Bergamasque Alps above the Val Brembana. The hut lies on the main route between Rifugio Brunni and Rifugio Alpe Corni, a natural stop for walkers doing multi-day traverses across the region. From Piazza Brembana (the valley settlement), allow 3 hours to reach the hut via the Passo della Ganda trail. The final approach gains 800m and crosses alpine meadow before reaching the rifugio.

The hut holds around 50 beds split between private rooms and dormitories. Half-board (mattress, breakfast, dinner) is standard; the kitchen serves solid mountain food typical of the Bergamasque valleys—polenta, cheese, roasted meats. Solar panels and a small water catchment system keep the rifugio running independently. The hut operates year-round but staff presence is reliable June to September. Outside these months, call ahead to confirm opening.

Book directly with the rifugio 3–4 weeks ahead for summer weekends. July and August fill quickly with Italian families doing the CAI's classic Bergamasque hut circuits. The rifugio is not affiliated with the major Alpine clubs, so bookings go through their own system—phone rather than email for reliability. Winter access requires ski mountaineering experience and depends on snow conditions; contact the hut in advance if planning a winter visit.
