Refuge Baita Fontaneto

Rifugio Baita Fontaneto sits at 1,380m in the Bergamask Alps, accessible from the Val Seriana valley. The hut serves hikers crossing between the lower valleys and higher alpine terrain. Most visitors approach from Ardesio, taking 2.5–3 hours on foot via marked trails through mixed forest and alpine meadow. The location makes it a logical stop for day hikes or as a base camp for ridge walks in the surrounding peaks.

The refuge has 15 beds split across simple dormitory rooms. The CAI manages it as a working hut rather than a tourist facility, so expect basic but clean accommodation. Meals are available by prior arrangement—inform the keeper when you book if you need dinner and breakfast. Water comes from a reliable spring. The hut opens year-round but gets fewer visitors in winter; confirm current conditions before traveling in snow season. Mobile signal is sporadic.

Book directly by email or phone with the CAI Sezione di Palazzolo sull'Oglio at least one week ahead for weekend visits. July and August see steady traffic; book 3–4 weeks out for peak season. The hut attracts serious hill walkers rather than casual day-trippers, so you'll find a working mountain atmosphere rather than commercial hospitality. Bring a headtorch, your own toiletries, and cash—card payments may not be reliable this far from towns.
