Refuge Bernasca

Rifugio Bernasca sits at 2,094m in the Val Bognanco, a steep valley on the Italian side of the Monte Rosa massif. The main approach runs from Bognanco village (1,270m). Allow 3–4 hours to hike up; the path climbs steeply through forest and alpine meadows. The refuge also marks a transit point on longer routes through the Monte Rosa region, accessed from the Simplon Pass side.
The refuge has 16 beds in simple dormitory arrangements. Meals and drinks are available—book dinner in advance. Facilities include drinking water and flush toilets. The season runs from June through September, depending on snow conditions. Winter access is unreliable. The hut is managed as a small, family-run operation; expect basic but functional accommodation suited to walkers and mountaineers moving through the region rather than a multi-day base.
Contact the refuge directly by phone to book beds and meals. July and August fill quickly; aim to book 4–6 weeks ahead for these months. June and September are quieter. Day visits are possible if space permits, but overnight guests have priority.
