Refuge Cazzaniga-Merlini

Refuge Cazzaniga-Merlini stands at 1,885m in the Bergamasc Alps near Colzate, in the Brescia province of Lombardy. The hut sits on the edge of the limestone Presolana massif, a serious rock climbing destination. Approach it from Colzate village via the Val di Scalve, following marked trails through steep terrain. The walk takes roughly 2.5 hours from the road head. The hut anchors routes into the Presolana climbing areas and connects to multi-day traverses across the Orobian ridge system. Snow blocks the high passes from November through May, so plan accordingly.
The refuge sleeps 25 people across shared dormitory rooms. Meals focus on hearty mountain food—expect pasta, risotto, and local cheese. The kitchen provides hot water and basic cooking facilities. The hut runs a small bar. Toilets and water are available; showers are not. Winter stays require special arrangements given the remote location and avalanche exposure. The hut typically opens May through October, though exact dates shift with snow conditions.
