Refuge G.A.M. al Monte Suchello

Rifugio G.A.M. al Monte Suchello sits at 1,508m in the Ticino Alps above the Val Maggia, on the border between Switzerland and Italy. The standard approach is from Maggia village (625m), a 4-hour hike gaining 883m steadily through chestnut forest and open terrain. Alternative routes exist from surrounding valleys, but the Maggia approach is most direct. The refuge sits roughly two hours' walk below the Monte Suchello summit (1,957m), making it a logical base for ridge walking along the Ticino-Lombardy border.
The hut accommodates around 40 people in small dorms and offers half-board (dinner and breakfast included). The kitchen provides hearty mountain meals; they'll prepare packed lunches if requested. Water comes from a reliable spring. The refuge operates from April through October, with the busiest period falling in July and August. It's a working hut—managed by the locally-based G.A.M. group—rather than a major SAC facility, so standards reflect its modest size and position as a backcountry base rather than a showpiece.

The refuge sits far enough from major transit routes that it never reaches the overcrowding of honeypot huts. Spring and autumn offer excellent hiking conditions with lower crowds.
