Refuge Gualtiero Laeng

Rifugio Gualtiero Laeng sits at 1760m in the Val di Funes (Villnöss Valley) in South Tyrol, on the eastern side of the Odle-Puez massif. Reach it from the village of Villnöss by hiking 2.5 hours uphill through forest and alpine meadow. The approach is steady but not technical. Most hikers use this hut as a base for day walks into the Odle peaks or as a staging point on longer valley traverses.
The refuge operates year-round and offers 18 beds in mixed and private rooms. Evening meals are available if you book ahead. The kitchen provides simple, filling food typical of mountain huts in this region. There's no hot shower, but you'll find washbasins with cold water and a basic toilet. Solar panels provide limited electricity. The hut is quiet and rarely crowded outside July and August.
Phone the refuge directly to book beds and evening meals. They prefer advance notice of at least one day for meals. July and August fill weekends and some weekdays, particularly during the Italian school holidays mid-August. Book 2-3 weeks ahead if you're planning a visit then. June, September, and October offer the best chance of walking in without a reservation. The hut closes only during the heaviest snow months in December and early January.
