Refuge Parafulmine

Rifugio Parafulmine sits at 1536m on the south side of Monte Generoso in the Ticino Alps, near the Swiss-Italian border. Reach it from Mendrisio (30km south of Lugano) by hiking 2.5 hours via the Capolago trail through mixed forest and open slopes. Alternatively, approach from the Italian side near Mendrisio. The hut serves as a base for ridge walks across Monte Generoso and onward routes toward the Malcantone region. The terrain around the hut mixes woodland and meadow, offering easier options for less technical hikers.
The rifugio has capacity for around 30 guests across dormitory and a few private rooms. Meals include hearty dinners and packed lunches on request, with an emphasis on regional Ticinese cooking. The hut has no WiFi but provides electricity and basic washroom facilities. Water comes from a reliable spring. Opening season runs from April through October, with occasional weekend openings in winter. Staff speak Italian and some German.
Book by phone or email at least two weeks ahead for weekends and July-August. Weekday visits in shoulder season (May and September) are more flexible. The hut fills quickly on summer Saturdays when day-hikers from Lugano and the lowland towns arrive. Contact details are on the hut's SAC/CAS listing.
