Baite Pianezzo

Baite Pianezzo sits at 1,176m in the Val Colla, on the southern flank of the Lepontine Alps in Ticino. Reach it from Nara (15km south of Bellinzona) via a 2.5-hour hike ascending through mixed forest and open meadow. The path is well-marked and moderate; allow 3 hours on the return descent. This is the practical basecamp for exploring the ridges and peaks around Gazzirola (2,127m) and Monte Pianezzo (1,897m), both reached in 2–3 hours from the hut.
The hut is a modest operation with 25 beds split across simple rooms. It offers half-board (dinner and breakfast included) and packed lunches on request. Water comes from a spring. There's no electricity, so plan accordingly. The season runs June through September; winter access is unpredictable. This is a working alpine dairy farm first, mountain hut second—expect functional rather than fancy accommodation. The hut is managed by the local family who also run it as an agritourism operation.
Book directly by calling ahead (phone numbers are posted at trailheads in the valley). July and August fill quickly; aim to confirm your dates at least 2–3 weeks in advance. The hut accepts walk-ins outside peak season but don't count on it mid-summer. Bring cash; card payment is unreliable.
