Bivacco Alpe Mottac

Bivacco Alpe Mottac sits at 1690m in the Lepontine Alps above the Verbano valley in Ticino. Access via the Val Verzasca—park at Sonogno and hike 2.5 hours northeast through the valley, climbing steeply to the pasture. This is a serious approach in poor weather. The bivacco lies on the watershed between Ticino and Valais, placing it on routes toward Basodino (3273m) and Monte Leone (3552m). Most climbers use it as a staging post rather than a destination hut.
The bivacco is basic: 8 beds in dormitory style, no guardian, no meals. Bring your own sleeping bag, stove fuel, water, and food. There's a wood stove for warmth. Winter snow closes this regularly—expect access May to October only, though late season weather can be unpredictable. The isolation and minimal facilities demand route-finding skill and self-sufficiency. Solo hikers should consider the long, exposed approach carefully.
This is not a booking situation. There's no phone, no email, no advance reservation system. Arrive early if you plan to stay, especially in summer weekends. The hut is free to use. Respect the simplicity: pack out all rubbish, don't damage the structure, and leave the logbook note so others know the hut is functional.
