Bivacco Baitello Casis

Bivacco Baitello Casis sits at 1,390m in the Bernina Alps, above the Val Poschiavo in Italian-speaking Ticino. Reach it from Poschiavo village (1,014m) via a steep hiking trail that takes 2–2.5 hours. The approach climbs steadily through forest and open terrain, gaining 376m elevation. This is a working base for climbers tackling peaks in the Bernina massif, not a destination hut. Access is year-round, though snow makes the trail harder in winter months.

The bivacco is a simple refuge with 10 beds in shared dormitory style. There is no piped water, no shower, and no flush toilet. Bring a headtorch—lighting is minimal. The hut is unguarded and unstaffed; you must be self-sufficient. Pack food and drink for your stay. It functions as a staging point for mountaineering parties heading to higher elevations. The location works well for acclimatisation or as a base for day climbs on the surrounding peaks, particularly for alpinists working on rock and mixed terrain.

Book by contacting the local mountain rescue or hiking club in Poschiavo beforehand, as the hut has no telephone or warden on-site. Bring your own sleeping bag and mat. Expect basic conditions: this is an alpine working refuge, not a comfort destination. July and August see the most traffic. Winter ascents require avalanche skills and proper equipment.
