Cabin Cognóra

Capanna Cognóra sits at 1938m in the Ticino Alps, above the Val Colla valley. The most direct approach is from Ligornetto: walk northeast for 2.5 hours through forest and pasture to reach the hut. Alternatively, start from Meride on the southern shore of Lugano Lake and allow 3.5 hours via a steeper but more scenic route. Both approaches gain roughly 800m elevation. The hut sits on the border between dense woodland and alpine meadow, making it a practical base for traverses across the southern Swiss Alps and access to peaks like Pizz di Gino and Pizzo di Claro.
The hut holds 20 beds across simple dormitory rooms. A shower is available—rare at this elevation in Ticino. The kitchen provides hot meals including pasta dishes and hearty stews; bring cash as card payments may not be accepted. The SAC manages the hut and typically opens from May through October, though dates depend on snow cover and staffing. Check current opening status before travel, particularly in shoulder seasons. Winter access is not guaranteed.
Phone the hut directly to reserve beds, especially for weekends and the July–August peak. Expect to book at least 2–3 weeks ahead for summer months. The hut owner speaks Italian and some English; calling between 17:00–19:00 increases your chances of connection. Expect to pay around 50 CHF per night for dormitory accommodation. Bring cash unless you arrange payment in advance.
