About

Capanna Corno Gries sits at 2,338m on the border between Ticino and Valais, on the southern slopes of the Gotthard massif. Reach it from Nufenen Pass (2,478m) in 1.5 hours on foot, or from Hospental in the Gotthard valley in 4–5 hours. The approach from Nufenen is the standard route; the hut sits just below the pass on the Ticino side. Most hikers use this as a base for traversing the high terrain between Gotthard and Lukmanier, or for day trips into the surrounding peaks and passes.
The hut is run by CAS Bellinzona e valli (the Bellinzona and Valleys section of the Swiss Alpine Club). It has 46 beds in mixed dormitories. The kitchen serves hot meals at dinner and breakfast; a self-catering kitchen is available if you prefer to cook. Drinking water is reliable. The hut is open year-round, though conditions above 2,300m in winter require proper equipment and experience. The SAC section maintains the hut to standard Alpine Club standards.
Book directly with CAS Bellinzona e valli by email or phone. Summer weekends (July–August) fill 4–6 weeks ahead. Shoulder seasons (June, September) are quieter and often have availability with shorter notice. If you're crossing the Gotthard massif on a multi-day trip, secure your nights in advance; solo walkers may find spaces on weekdays even in peak season.
