Refuge delle Nevi

Rifugio delle Nevi sits at 1,251m in the Lepontine Alps of southern Ticino, on the border with Valais. The hut anchors the Val Bavona, a valley that remains largely car-free and genuinely quiet. Reach it from Cevio in 3.5 hours on foot, following the valley floor with minimal elevation gain. Most hikers arrive from Robiei (the cable-car terminus above Cevio, 1,890m), a 2.5-hour descent that saves the morning slog. The hut sits well-positioned for walking the upper valley and making forays toward Basòdino (3,272m) and the surrounding cirque.
The hut is simple and family-friendly, with capacity for around 40 guests. Meals focus on regional cooking—polenta, risotto, local cheeses—and the kitchen will prepare packed lunches. Showers are available. The season runs May through September, with reduced hours outside peak summer. The hut is managed locally and serves equally as a base for casual walkers and mountaineers gearing up for higher peaks.
Book directly by phone or email as early as possible for July and August weekends. The hut fills quickly during the Swiss school holidays (early July and mid-August). Weekdays and June offer genuine solitude. The Val Bavona is becoming better known, so advance notice—at least 2–3 weeks—is sensible even outside peak season.
