The route follows the Val Bavona and climbs through forest and alpine meadow. From the Ritom Pass (2,208m), accessible from the Lukmanier Pass road, the hut is a 45-minute walk. Access is foot-traffic only; there is no road.
The rifugio is a simple, stone-built hut run by the SAC (Swiss Alpine Club). It has 40 bed spaces in basic dormitory accommodation and serves meals to residents. The kitchen provides hot water for self-catering. Water comes from a spring outside. Opening season is June through September, with variable dates depending on snow cover. The hut operates on a self-service basis outside peak season; check current status before visiting.
