Refuge Sonnenberg

Rifugio Sonnenberg sits at 2,284m in the Cottian Alps, on the border between Piedmont and France. Reach it from Prà del Torno (1,560m) via a 4.5-hour uphill walk through larch forest and alpine meadows. The trail is well-marked and steady. In winter and early spring, avalanche risk closes the approach, so check conditions before traveling. The hut also connects to longer ridge traverses toward Punta Marguareis (2,651m) to the east and toward the French border to the west.

The rifugio operates year-round and holds 50 beds in simple rooms. Staff serve three meals daily, with hearty Piedmont cooking and vegetarian options available. The kitchen takes reservations for dinner. Water comes from a spring; showers cost extra. The building is solid and functional rather than luxurious. Half-board is standard. Cell reception is poor but the hut has a landline.

Book directly by phone at least 10 days ahead, especially for weekends June through September. The hut fills quickly on sunny Saturdays. Winter visits require prior arrangement. Arrive by early afternoon if hiking on the same day, as the evening trail down to Prà del Torno becomes dangerous in poor light.
