Bivacco Duccio Manenti

Bivacco Duccio Manenti sits at 2806m in the Valais Alps, accessed from the Val d'Ayas on the Italian side. The approach takes roughly 3 to 3.5 hours from Champoluc, climbing northeast through pasture and scree to reach the bivouac. This is a working mountaineer's hut, not a leisure destination—bring a headtorch and expect spartan conditions. The location puts you within striking distance of peaks in the Monte Rosa massif, including Breithorn and Castor.
The bivouac is managed by the CAI (Club Alpino Italiano), sezione di Torino. It's a small shelter with beds for around 10 people in basic dormitory-style sleeping areas. There's no hot water, heating, or prepared meals. Bring your own food and water, or melt snow. A stove and pots are available. The hut operates year-round, though winter access requires mountaineering experience and avalanche awareness. Summer (July–September) is the main season; snow covers the upper approach until June.

Phone reception is unreliable; confirm your booking in writing. Come prepared for cold, confined quarters and bring a sleeping bag rated for high altitude.
