About

Bivacco Val Gabbio sits at 980m in the Val Gabbio, a side valley of the Valais that sees fewer visitors than the main tourist routes. Access from Fieberbrugg village takes 1.5 hours on foot through mixed forest, climbing steadily but never steeply. The hut serves as a base for scrambling on the surrounding rock peaks and for traversing into the Bernese Alps via col routes. Summer snow melts by late June, and the valley offers good scrambling terrain on schist and gneiss.

This is a simple bivouac shelter, not a staffed hut. It has basic sleeping spaces for around 12 people and a small interior stove. There is no running water or catering on-site—bring all food and water from the valley, or collect water from the stream nearby. The shelter is open year-round but winter access requires mountain experience and often skis. The location works well for 2–3 day traverses linking the Valais and Bernese Alps, or as a lightwalking base for climbers acclimatizing before higher peaks.

Book directly with the SAC section managing the hut. Space is rarely full except in August, though July weekends can be busy. Bring a sleeping bag, mat, and stove fuel. The hut has a logbook—sign in and out for safety.
