Cabin du Moutonnier

Cabin du Moutonnier sits at 1,937m in the Valais Alps, overlooking the Val d'Anniviers. The hut is reached from Grimentz in about 3 hours via a well-marked trail that climbs through larch forest and alpine meadow. Alternatively, approach from Saint-Luc in roughly 4 hours. The location makes it a logical base for day hikes to Pic Chamoix (2,643m) or La Bella Tolla (2,651m), or as a stopping point on longer traverses through the Val d'Anniviers.
The hut is SAC-managed and operates year-round, though conditions are alpine and winter access requires experience. It has space for around 40 guests across dormitory and small private rooms. Meals are simple and hearty—expect cooked dinners and breakfast. The kitchen is basic but functional. Water comes from a spring nearby. Cell reception is unreliable. There are no showers. Toilet facilities are outside.
Book directly with the hut for July and August weekends; these periods fill quickly. June, September, and early October offer better availability. Winter bookings are less competitive. Phone ahead to check water availability if visiting outside the main season, as the spring can freeze or run low. The hut is family-friendly and welcoming to mountain bikers in summer—if arriving by bike, confirm the trail is passable before committing your trip.
