Gfellalphütte

Gfellalphütte sits at 1,849m in the Valais Alps above the village of Törbel. Reach it from Törbel (1,370m) in 1.5 to 2 hours on a well-marked path through alpine meadows and light forest. The hut is also accessible from the Augstbord Pass (2,894m) in 1.5 hours, making it useful for longer ridge traverses or as a rest stop on multi-day routes. This location works well for day hikes in the surrounding peaks or as a base for the Augstbordpass traverse toward the Unterotstafel area.
Gfellalphütte is a traditional SAC-managed alpine hut with around 50 beds split between dorm and smaller rooms. The hut operates year-round (with caretaker presence June to September) and serves simple meals and drinks. Water is usually available on-site. The hut sits in open pasture with views toward the Mattertal valley and surrounding summits.
Book directly by phone or email well ahead for weekends and July-August. The hut is relatively quiet compared to major valley huts, but demand increases during school holidays. Winter access depends on snow conditions—confirm with the keeper before attempting a winter visit. Most climbers use this hut as part of longer circuits rather than as a destination itself, so booking pressure is moderate but predictable.
