Refuge D’ Airoz (Refuge D’ Aïroz)

Refuge d'Aïroz sits at 2,750m in the Massif de la Vanoise, accessible from the Pralognan-la-Vanoise valley. The standard approach takes 3.5 hours from Pralognan (1,425m), climbing the Vallée de la Traversette. The hut sits above the Lac de la Grattaloup and makes a logical base for crossings into the Parc National de la Vanoise or circuits around Mont-Blanc massif approaches. Alternative access exists via the Col de la Louze from the Modane side, roughly 4 hours. Snow typically blocks routes before mid-June.
The hut operates as a staffed refuge under FFCAM management with 60 bed spaces across shared dormitory rooms. Half-board meals are standard: a substantial dinner and breakfast included with the room. The kitchen provides packed lunches on request. Water comes from the glacial lake; the hut has basic ablutions with a cold-water sink. The season runs mid-June to end-September, closing entirely in winter. This is working mountaineering terrain: the hut fills with hikers planning longer traverses rather than day-trippers.
Book in advance from mid-July onwards, especially weekends. Direct booking by phone or email is fastest; the FFCAM website lists contact details. July and August require booking 4–6 weeks ahead. Shoulder months (June and September) are quieter. Payment is typically cash or bank transfer; confirm payment methods when booking. Staff expect you to arrive by early evening; late arrivals need advance warning.
