Refuge du Col de Balme

Refuge du Col de Balme sits at 2,191m on the border between Valais and Haute-Savoie, France. The hut occupies the Col de Balme pass itself, a major junction on the Tour du Mont-Blanc route. From Le Châble in the Bagnes valley, take the Téléphérique de Mayen to 2,000m, then hike 1.5 hours to the refuge. From Argentière on the French side, it's 2.5 hours uphill via the Aiguillette des Posettes. The pass sits on the watershed between the Rhône and Arve valleys, with views south towards Mont-Blanc and north towards the Bernese Oberland.
The refuge offers 60 beds in a mix of dormitories and private rooms. Half-board meals are available; the kitchen serves simple mountain food focused on Swiss standards. Hot showers and electricity are available. The hut operates year-round, though snow closes the hiking approaches in winter. Staff speak French and English. The location makes it useful as an overnight stop on the TMB or as a base for day hikes to Mont-Blanc viewpoints and nearby passes.
Book directly by phone several weeks ahead for July and August, when demand is heavy on the TMB circuit. Weekend bookings in summer fill quickly. Spring and autumn are quieter but weather is less reliable. The hut accepts credit card payments over the phone and expects payment in full before arrival. Email is slower; phone calls get faster confirmation.
