About

Refuge Vallot sits at 4,322m on Mont Blanc's northeast ridge, making it the highest staffed hut in France and a critical waypoint for the mountain's normal route. Reach it from Goûter Hut (3,835m) in 2–3 hours of steep scrambling over mixed terrain. Most climbers approach via the Goûter route from Nid d'Aigle trailhead, accessed from Saint-Gervais. The hut perches above the clouds on most days and offers no easy descent—you commit to the climb or retreat.
Vallot provides 12 beds in cramped dormitory conditions. Expect basic shelter, not comfort. There is no hot water, heating is minimal, and the kitchen serves only tea and soup to those already staying. Bring your own food. The FFCAM operates it from mid-June to mid-September, staffed by volunteers managing turnover daily. Altitude affects everyone—acclimatization is impossible at this elevation. Many climbers spend only 2–3 hours here before pushing to Mont Blanc's 4,808m summit at night.
Book well ahead through the FFCAM website or Club Alpin Français. July and August demand reservations 4–6 weeks in advance. June and September have more availability but worse weather. Arrive early in the day—the hut fills rapidly and latecomers may be turned away. Check the FFCAM's daily capacity updates before planning your climb, as avalanche risk or weather can close access to the building itself. Many parties skip the hut entirely and climb through the night from Goûter.
