Refuge Alpe Colma

Rifugio Alpe Colma sits at 1,570m on the Alpe Colma plateau in the Valais, near the Swiss-Italian border. Reach it from Villadossola (on the Italian side) via a 2-hour hike through open pasture, or from the Swiss side via Nufenen. The approach is straightforward trail hiking with minimal scrambling—solid for walkers rather than climbers.
The refuge operates as a simple mountain inn with around 40 beds spread across dormitory and a few private rooms. Meals focus on basic mountain fare: pasta, cheese, cured meats, and hearty soups. Water comes from the spring on the plateau. There's a wood stove for warmth. The CAI maintains the building to functional standards, not luxury ones. Open from June through September, depending on snow melt and weather. Winter access is unreliable.

Reserve at least 2-3 weeks ahead for peak season. Weekday visits in June or September offer shorter waits and a quieter experience. The hut sits on a route connecting Nufenen to Simplon, so aim for off-peak days if you're passing through rather than stopping overnight.
