Refuge Letey-Champillon

Refuge Letey-Champillon sits at 2,465m in the Gran Paradiso massif, above the Valle d'Aosta. Reach it from Cogne by hiking the Valnontey valley for 2.5 hours. The route climbs steady forest terrain then opens into alpine meadows. It's the main staging point for ascents of Gran Paradiso (4,061m), lying directly beneath the normal route. Most climbers sleep here before a summit push starting around 3am. Day hikers use it as a turnaround point for loop walks through the surrounding high pastures.

The refuge holds 32 beds in simple dormitory rooms. Meals are substantial and compulsory for overnight guests — expect traditional mountain food. Water comes from a nearby stream. There's no shower. The hut operates June through September. Afternoon arrival gives you time to acclimatize before an early start; many parties push from Cogne to the summit and down in one long day, but sleeping here reduces risk. The staff are experienced with Gran Paradiso logistics.

Book direct by email as soon as your dates are confirmed. July and August fill quickly — contact them two months ahead for summer weekends. June and September have more availability. The refuge is managed by volunteers and can be slow to respond; send a follow-up if you don't hear back within a week. Confirm your arrival time when you book. Bring cash for incidentals; cards aren't reliably accepted.
