About

Rifugio Teodulo sits at 3,317m on the Théodule Pass between Zermatt and Breuil-Cervinia. You can reach it from Zermatt by taking the Gornergrat railway to Rotenboden (2,815m), then hiking 2.5 hours up scree and marked trails. From the Italian side at Breuil-Cervinia, the approach is shorter at around 2 hours. The pass itself is straightforward hiking terrain, not a technical climb. This is serious altitude—factor in acclimatization if you're coming from lower elevations.
The hut holds 60 beds in shared dormitories. Hot meals are served, and you can expect mountain fare rather than refined cuisine. The kitchen provides drinking water from mountain sources. The location makes it ideal for acclimatizing before attempts on Mont-Rose or Gran Paradiso, or as a waypoint on traverse routes. The hut operates year-round, though winter conditions are extreme and climbing experience is essential. Summer (July and August) is the main season for hiking traffic.
Book by email or phone at least 4 weeks ahead during July and August. July is the busiest month—book 6–8 weeks in advance if possible. The hut can fill with mountaineers working their way up Gran Paradiso, so don't rely on walk-ups in peak season. Check conditions before traveling in winter; the pass can close without warning.
