About
Rifugio Torino Nuovo sits at 3,382m on the Gran Paradiso massif, between Mont Blanc and Gran Paradiso itself. The standard approach follows the Gran Paradiso valley from Cogne, a 2-hour drive from Aosta. From Cogne village, hike 4 hours up the valley path to Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele (2,732m), then continue 2 hours on steeper terrain to Torino Nuovo. The route gains 650m from the lower refuge and is non-technical but exposed to weather. Summer conditions (July–September) make for stable access. Winter and spring approaches require mountaineering experience and crevasse rescue skills.
The hut holds 60 people in dormitory beds. SAC/CAS manages the refuge. Meals are served daily during season, with dinner and breakfast included for overnighting guests. The kitchen provides packed lunches for summit bids. Water comes from melted snow. Toilets are basic. The refuge opens mid-June through September, depending on snow cover and conditions. It's the logical base for climbing Gran Paradiso (4,061m), reachable in 3–4 hours from the hut via straightforward glacier terrain.
Book directly with the hut from May onwards. July and August demand reservations 4–6 weeks ahead. The refuge fills quickly during the climbing season. Bring your sleeping bag (sheets are not provided). Expect cold nights above 3,300m even in summer. Mobile reception is unreliable.
