Üeschinenhütte

Üeschinenhütte sits at 1890m in the Üeschinen Valley above Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland. Reach it from Kandersteg village in 2.5 hours via the Oeschinen Lake trail. The path is well-marked and moderately steep in sections but straightforward for hikers with basic fitness. An alternative approach from Blausee takes roughly 3 hours and is slightly less direct. The hut makes an excellent base for exploring the Üeschinen cirque and connecting hikes toward the Gemmi Pass region.
The SAC-managed hut accommodates 50 guests in dorms and a few double rooms. Meals feature hearty Alpine cooking focused on local ingredients. The kitchen prepares packed lunches on request for onward hikes. There's no WiFi—a genuine advantage if you're seeking disconnection. The hut operates mid-June through mid-October, with variable weekday staffing outside peak summer. Water comes from a spring near the building and is reliable year-round. The outdoor seating area faces the valley and offers views toward the Oeschinen Lake below.
Book directly through the SAC website or by phone (+41 33 675 11 30). July and August require booking 4–8 weeks ahead, particularly for weekends and groups. June and September fill steadily but show more availability. The hut charges around 35–45 CHF per person for a dorm bed. Half-board (bed, breakfast, dinner) costs approximately 75–85 CHF. Call ahead in shoulder months to confirm staffing if you're planning a specific date.
