Cabin du Peney

Cabane du Peney sits at 2,477m in the Chaîne du Rougin, above the Vallée de Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval in Haute-Savoie. Reach it from the village of Sixt (850m) via the GR96 trail, climbing steeply through forest then open pasture for 4–5 hours. The route is well-marked but exposed in places. Most parties arrive in one day from the valley, though fit hikers can extend the approach by combining it with adjacent peaks like Tête de Danglasse (2,686m).
The cabin is a basic mountain shelter managed by the FFCAM, offering around 30 places on a mix of bunks and mattresses. There is no guardian (gardien) and no meals provided—bring a stove, fuel, and all food. Water is available from a spring near the cabin. Toilet facilities are basic. The hut opens year-round but is most reliably accessible June to September; winter conditions demand alpine experience and avalanche awareness. The setting makes it ideal for ascents of Mont Buet (3,096m) and peaks across the Chaîne du Rougin.
Book through the FFCAM directly or via their website. The cabin is rarely full even in July and August, but notify the federation ahead if you plan to stay. Keys are held at the Maison de la Sixtine or nearby gîtes in Sixt—confirm access arrangements when you book. There is no electricity or heating, so bring a sleeping bag rated for alpine conditions.
