Görlitzer Hut

The Görlitzer Hütte sits at 2,126m in the Kreuzeck Group above the Gail Valley in Carinthia. Reach it from Kötschach-Mauthen (900m) in 4 hours via the Wingerscharte trail, a steady climb through mixed forest and alpine pasture. Alternative approach from Gartnerkofel takes 3.5 hours. The hut forms a logical stop on multi-day traverses linking the Gail Valley to the Lesachtal and Nagelfluh Group, or as a base for peaks like Arzberg (2,384m) and Gartnerkofel (2,195m). Summer heat makes early starts essential; snow can block access until June.
The OeAV manages this simple, traditional mountain hut with 45 beds split between dorm rooms and doubles. Generator power only—no mains electricity. Meals focus on hearty Austrian fare: Kasnocken, Bauernkrapfen, and stews. Water comes from a spring above the hut. The warden typically opens late May through September, closing earlier if poor weather or low snow conditions make access difficult. Check opening status before planning.
Book directly with the warden by phone or email at least 4 weeks ahead for July and August. July weekends fill fast. Arrive by 17:00 to secure a bed if you haven't booked; the warden accommodates walk-ins space permitting, but don't rely on it. Bring cash (Euros) only—card payments aren't available. The hut sits remote enough that supplies must be packed in or ordered days ahead.
