Schrottalmhütte

The Schrottalmhütte sits at 1450m in the Gailtal valley of Carinthia, about 15km south of Hermagor. Drive to Möderbrugg in the Schottal valley, park near the small settlement, and walk 2–2.5 hours uphill through mixed forest to the hut. The route gains 450m steadily but without technical difficulty. Summer is the main season; winter access depends on snow conditions and is not guaranteed. The hut serves as a base for day walks in the Gail Alps, including routes to Thermiak (2193m) and connections into the Karavanke range. The landscape opens from dense forest to scrub and grassland as you climb.
The hut is run by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and operates year-round with a 50–60 person capacity. Full-board accommodation in mixed dormitories and a few double rooms is standard. Meals focus on hearty mountain cooking: soups, local meat, fresh bread. The hut has no shower, just washbasins and basic facilities. Toilets are outside or in an outbuilding. Solar panels supplement the grid connection. The hut keeper typically stays through winter if snow permits access by foot or ski.

Winter weekends can be busy among ski-touring parties, so contact ahead to confirm access and openings. The hut is not staffed for walk-ins in deep winter.
