Leckfeldalm

Leckfeldalm sits at 1900m in the Defereggen Valley (Defereggen Tal) in East Tyrol. Access is via the village of Hopfgarten in Defereggen. The approach takes roughly 2 hours on foot from the valley floor, following waymarked trails through alpine meadow and larch forest. The hut serves as a solid base for day walks across the surrounding high pastures and access to peaks in the Rieserfernergruppe. The location is ideal for hikers wanting easier terrain than major alpine passes, though it offers enough elevation gain to feel properly in the mountains.
The hut offers 40 beds across simple rooms. Meals are available—book dinner ahead when you reserve accommodation. The kitchen serves hearty Austrian fare using local produce. Facilities include a small dining room and basic shower access. Leckfeldalm operates year-round but is quietest in winter. Summer (July-August) brings regular traffic from day walkers and multi-day hikers. The atmosphere is straightforward: you're here for the hiking, not luxury.
