Otto-Kandler-Haus

The Otto-Kandler-Haus sits at 1195m in the Gemeindealpe massif above Mitterbach an der Erlauf in Lower Austria. Reach it from Mitterbach village (40 minutes on foot) or from the Gemeindealpe cable car station (1,339m, 20 minutes down). The hut serves hikers exploring the mid-altitude ridge trails between the Erlauftal and Ötscher regions. Most approach it as part of longer ridge walks rather than an overnight stop.
The hut is a modest facility offering simple meals and drinks. It operates year-round but check ahead for winter hours, as staffing can be limited in off-season. The hut has sleeping capacity but many hikers use it as a daytime refreshment point rather than an overnight base. Food is straightforward Alpine fare—expect soups, Schnitzel, and local cheese. The OeAV maintains the hut. Water is available on site.
Book accommodation directly if planning to stay overnight, especially during weekends and the July-August hiking season. Friday to Sunday fills quickly. Winter visits require advance confirmation. Phone ahead before making a winter ascent to verify opening status. The hut is accessible to most mountain hikers but not isolated enough to require special fitness.
