Lilienfelder Hut

Lilienfelder Hütte sits at 956m on the northern edge of the Ötscher massif in Lower Austria, about 90km southwest of Vienna. Reach it via the village of Lilienfeld in the Triesting Valley. From Lilienfeld train station, walk 2 hours uphill through beech forest on well-marked trails to the hut. The approach gains 600m steadily but isn't technical. This makes it a solid day-hike destination from Vienna or a base for exploring the Ötscher-Tormäuer National Park.
The hut is managed by the Lilienfeld section of the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and accommodates about 50 people in mixed dorms and private rooms. They serve simple Austrian fare at lunch and dinner. The hut has running water, heating, and basic toilet facilities—standards appropriate for a working mountain hut, not a resort. Open year-round, though winter visits require snow awareness. The location makes it a natural base for day hikes across the Ötscher plateau (1,893m) and into the dramatic Tormäuer gorge.
Call ahead to book, especially on weekends and during school holidays. July and August draw regular weekend crowds. Advance reservation is essential if you want a private room. Payment is cash or bank transfer; confirm current rates when you call. The hut sits close enough to Vienna for strong hikers to do it as a long day-trip, but staying overnight lets you climb the Ötscher itself or walk the Tormäuer trail without rushing.
