Peilsteinhaus
4.9About
The Peilsteinhaus sits at 716 m on the Peilstein, a rocky hill in the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods) of Lower Austria and one of the most popular rock-climbing areas near Vienna. The hut lies in the middle of the Peilstein crags, where the Peilsteinwände offer well over 800 climbing routes across the full range of grades, alongside an artificial climbing wall and via ferratas — making the house a natural base and meeting point for Viennese climbers. A 12-metre observation tower added in 2013 gives views over the surrounding woodland. Owned since 1927 by the Österreichischer Gebirgsverein, a section of the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV), it is a serviced hut offering 18 beds and 39 dormitory places. (It should not be confused with the separate Peilsteinhütte, run by the Naturfreunde, on the same hill.) The Peilsteinhaus is open year-round from Wednesday to Sunday, closed Mondays and Tuesdays except on public holidays. The easiest approach is a short 30-minute walk up from the car park at Schwarzensee; longer forest ascents come up from Raisenmarkt and from Weißenbach an der Triesting.
