Staffhütte

Staffhütte sits at 596m on the northern edge of the Gölsen Valley in Lower Austria, roughly 40km southwest of Vienna. The hut serves as a base for day walks through beech forests and limestone terrain typical of the northern Limestone Alps foothills. Reach it via the village of St. Veit an der Gölsen, then follow marked trails uphill for 1.5 to 2 hours depending on your starting point. The low elevation makes this a year-round destination, unlike higher Alpine huts.
The Naturfreunde manages the hut and maintains a modest setup focused on day hikers and walkers rather than mountaineers. Expect basic accommodation with dormitory beds and a handful of double rooms. The kitchen serves simple meals—typically Austrian fare like goulash, schnitzel, and seasonal vegetable dishes. The hut has no shower facilities, only cold water washbasins. It stays open throughout the year, though winter weekends sometimes bring crowds from Vienna.
Book directly through the managing Naturfreunde section in St. Veit an der Gölsen. Weekend availability fills quickly, especially in autumn when Vienna-based hikers escape the city. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal for visiting without the summer crush. July and August attract families with children. Phone ahead even for day visits to confirm meal availability. The hut is popular enough that turning up without reservation risks finding no beds, particularly on Saturdays.
