Austriahütte

Austriahütte sits at 1,638m in the Tennengebirge mountains south of Salzburg. The standard approach is from Annaberg-Lungötz via the Hirnzenhütte trail—allow 3 to 4 hours for the 8km ascent. You can also reach the hut from Bad Vigaun or via the longer ridge walk from Hirnzenhütte (2.5 hours). The terrain is steep in places but well-marked. The hut occupies a working meadow with views across the limestone peaks of the northern Salzburg Alps.
The OeAV Sektion Austria runs this 50-bed hut as a working base for serious hiking in the Tennengebirge. The building has shower facilities (unusual for this region), a simple dining room, and a kitchen that serves three meals daily. Beds are in small dormitories and a handful of twin rooms. The hut opens from late spring through early autumn—typically May to October, though you should confirm dates when booking. Mobile reception is patchy; there is no WiFi. Supplies and fuel must be carried in.
Book at least 2 weeks ahead for weekends and 6 weeks ahead for July and August. Contact the OeAV Sektion Austria directly by phone or email to reserve. The hut gets busy during school holidays and on clear weekends in June and September. Mid-week visits are quieter. Arrive by mid-afternoon if you have no reservation, as the hut fills quickly in summer.
