About
Dachsteinhaus sits at 2,996m on the Dachstein plateau in the Salzburg Alps, below the summit of Dachstein itself (2,995m is actually the nearby Hoher Dachstein). You approach from Ramsau am Dachstein via the Binntal, a steep climb of 1,300m vertical over 3–4 hours. The terrain is demanding—rocky and exposed in places. Winter and early spring bring avalanche risk. From the plateau, the hut makes an obvious base for day trips across the high plateau or attempts on the surrounding peaks including the Hoher Dachstein and Thorstein.
The OeAV-managed hut has capacity for around 50 people in simple dormitory rooms. Meals are substantial and hearty. The kitchen serves breakfast, lunch packs, and dinner. Water comes from mountain sources. Facilities are basic but functional—expect an outhouse toilet and no shower. The hut opens from mid-June through September, with peak season in July and August when July can be busy.
Book directly with the hut at least 8 weeks ahead for July and August. Contact details are available through the OeAV website. Phone ahead even with a reservation, especially if weather is poor or you're arriving late. The hut closes entirely in winter; the plateau is serious mountain terrain and not suitable for casual winter visits. Come prepared for cold nights and variable weather. Bring your own sleeping bag.
