Brandner Hochalm

Brandner Hochalm sits at 1,770m in the Pinzgau region south of Zell am See. Reach it from the village of Brand by hiking the Saalbach Valley trail for roughly 2 hours. The route climbs steadily through mixed forest and alpine pasture with minimal exposure. In summer, a rough jeep track serves the hut but is closed to public vehicles—hiking remains the practical approach for most visitors.

This is a working mountain dairy and modest hiker's hut, not a staffed Alpine Club facility. The Hochalm operates seasonally from June through September, offering simple meals based on what the dairy produces. Expect traditional Austrian fare rather than haute cuisine. Sleeping capacity is around 30 across basic dormitory rooms. Toilets are functional but spartan. The hut has no shower. This is fuel-stop territory: grab a meal, refill your water, and move on. The real draw is the quiet pastoral setting and access to ridges heading toward the Saalbach ski area's higher peaks.

Book by calling ahead in season. The hut fills on summer weekends and during school holidays in July and August. Mid-week visits offer better availability. Arrive by mid-afternoon to secure a meal and bed. Cash payment is standard. The hut's modest infrastructure means it won't accommodate large groups—solo hikers and pairs are the norm here.
