Graukogel Bergstation

Graukogel Bergstation sits at 1954m on the Graukogel, a prominent peak south of Salzburg city in the Salzach Valley foothills. Reach it by hiking from the village of Elsbethen (15 minutes by car south of Salzburg), following the marked trail up the Graukogel in roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. The approach is steady rather than steep, making it accessible for a half-day outing or as a base for ridge walking in the surrounding hills. In summer, you can also use the Graukogel cable car (Graukogelbahn) from Elsbethen to reach the station in 10 minutes, which is useful for descent or bad weather bailout.

The bergstation functions primarily as a mountain restaurant rather than an overnight refuge. It serves Austrian mountain food and drinks with views down the Salzach Valley toward Salzburg itself. On clear days the city spreads out below and you can see toward Untersberg and other local summits. The hut has a large terrace and indoor seating. Toilets are available. Opening times follow the cable car schedule year-round, roughly 9am to 5pm in winter and extending to 6pm or later in summer months—check ahead before a midweek visit. Food service stops 30 minutes before closing.

For planning purposes, treat this as a day-hike destination with food stops rather than a mountain hut for overnight stays. Summer weekends draw crowds from Salzburg. Book a table ahead for groups larger than 6 people by calling the cable car company directly. Solo walkers and small groups turn up on the day without booking.
