Großhütten

Großhütten sits at 1,238m on the eastern flank of the Hochkönig massif, roughly 90 minutes' walk above the village of Dienten am Hochkönig. The approach is steady rather than steep: head southeast from the village toward Sigloswald, then follow the marked trail through mixed forest. The hut serves as a solid base for day walks across the Hochkönig plateau and for traversing toward Arthurhaus or the Hochkönig summit itself at 2,941m. It's also a natural refueling stop on longer Alpine traverses linking the Salzburg and Berchtesgaden areas.
The OeAV-managed hut has 40 beds in simple dormitory rooms and a few doubles. Meals are available—book dinner when you reserve—and they serve good coffee and simple snacks throughout the day. The kitchen is basic but functional. Water comes from the spring nearby. The hut opens typically from June through September, though it sometimes operates weekends in shoulder seasons; check ahead if you're planning a spring or autumn visit. Mobile signal is weak to nonexistent.
Book your bed at least 3 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the hut directly by telephone or email rather than relying on online platforms—response times are faster and availability is more reliable. Arrive by 3pm to secure a good dinner slot. The hut has no credit card terminal, so bring cash or arrange bank transfer payment in advance.
