Gsengalmhütte
4.2About
The hut has 20 beds in simple rooms and serves hearty Austrian meals. It operates year-round but is busiest during summer hiking season (June to September) and at weekends. The kitchen produces standard hut fare—soups, schnitzel, regional cheese plates—at reasonable prices. Water comes from a mountain spring. Facilities are basic: an outhouse, cold water washrooms. Do not expect showers or mobile signal. The OeAV (Austrian Alpine Club) maintains the hut, and membership brings a small discount on overnight stays.
Book directly by phone well ahead if you plan to visit July or August—the hut fills quickly for weekend nights. Mid-week visits in shoulder seasons (May, June, September, October) require less advance planning. The hut prefers cash payment. Tell the warden ahead if you need a packed lunch for the next day. Winter access depends on snow conditions; contact the hut before attempting a winter visit.
