Spießalm

Spießalm sits at 1,200m on the northern slopes of the Tennengebirge, above the Salzach valley. Reach it from Golling an der Salzach in about 90 minutes on foot—the trail climbs steeply through forest, gaining 600m elevation. Drivers can park at the Torren trailhead and shorten the walk to roughly 45 minutes. The hut works as a day-trip destination or a base for exploring the limestone plateau above, with connections to Rußbach and the Torren area.

Spießalm is a working dairy farm that also offers refreshments and simple overnight accommodation. Expect around 20–30 beds in basic rooms. The kitchen serves substantial alpine food, including their own dairy products. Water comes from the spring on the property. The hut operates year-round but is busiest on weekends and Austrian school holidays. Winter access depends on snow conditions and avalanche risk—check conditions locally before heading up in January through March.

Book ahead if you're planning to stay overnight, especially for weekends. Contact the hut directly by phone to reserve. Summer weekends (June through September) fill up quickly with local families and day-trippers. The hut is unmanned some weekdays in shoulder seasons, so confirm opening hours before visiting.
