Hagener Hut

Hagener Hütte sits at 2448m in the Tennengebirge massif, south of Salzburg. The most direct approach is from Abtenau in the Lammertal valley. From the Gasteinertal side, climb via the Rauhenkopf route (5–6 hours from Hüttschlag). From Abtenau, the Langeck approach takes 4–5 hours. Both routes are straightforward hiking with steady elevation gain but no scrambling required. The hut serves as a base for traversing the Tennengebirge ridge or as a link on multi-day tours across the northern Salzburg Alps.
Hagener Hütte is managed by the Salzburg section of the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and accommodates around 50 people in mixed dormitories. Meals focus on hearty Austrian fare. The hut has basic shower facilities and operates from May to October, with extended opening over summer weekends. Kitchen access varies by season—check ahead if you need to self-cater. Water sourcing can be unreliable during dry spells, so arrive with a full bottle.
Book directly with the hut 6–8 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. The hut accepts reservations by telephone and email; details are on the OeAV website. Mid-week stays are less crowded. Bring cash for payment unless you arrange transfers in advance. Winter access is possible for experienced mountaineers with avalanche awareness but requires separate coordination with the guardian.
