Hinterleitnhütte

Hinterleitnhütte sits at 1,731m on the southern flank of the Steinernes Meer, between the Saalfelden Basin and the Leogang Valley. Reach it from Saalfelden in 3.5 hours via the Hochkeil trail, or from Leogang in 2.5 hours via Asitz. The approach is steady rather than steep. Winter access depends on snow conditions; ring ahead before December trips.
The hut sleeps around 60 people in mixed dormitories. Half-board meals are standard—substantial Alpine fare, not fancy. Showers and basic toilet facilities are available. The hut operates year-round but is quietest November through March. It's a working hut, not a resort, and the warden runs a tight ship. The location works well as a base for day walks into the Steinernes Meer or as a stage on longer routes crossing the Leogang Alps toward the Pillersee Valley.
Book directly by phone at least 4 weeks ahead for weekends June through September. July and August fill quickly; expect to wait unless you call early morning. Winter weekends also book solid. The warden speaks German and some English. Arrive by early afternoon to secure a bed and eat dinner. The hut takes no online reservations, so a phone call is your only option.
